 Some people say that it is most appropriate to stay where you are when you get lost. If you can stay in the same place after the iPhone is lost, it would be great. But sometimes it's not so lucky, the iPhone itself will not ask passers-by for directions, nor will it send a wolf smoke to ask you for help (generally speaking, as long as it is picked up, it will be taken for itself). The next time you lose your iPhone, you'll use the Find My iPhone to find it.

Prepare for the iPhone

   Tap Settings on the Home screen. Before tracking your iPhone with Location Services, you'll want to enable this feature in your iPhone settings. Find My iPhone requires iOS 5 or later, and Lost Mode requires iOS 6 or later.

   with your Apple ID. If you don't have an Apple ID, you'll need to create an Apple ID on your iPhone before you visit Find My iPhone. Apple ID is a free Apple account.

   Turn on Find My iPhone. In the iCloud Options section, there will be a switch labeled "Find My iPhone". Click to turn on this option. The phone asks if the feature is allowed to be turned on. Click Allow to enable it.

   Enable passwords. You can adjust the settings to make the iPhone automatically lock when the screen is off, requiring a 4-digit passcode to unlock the phone. To set a password, return to the Settings menu, select General, and select Password lock. Enter the password and confirm.

   • when unlocking the screen, you need to enter a password. if you lose your phone, this password can effectively prevent strangers from stealing your data.

Look for your iPhone

   Open the iCloud website. You can access the iCloud website from any web browser. You need to use your Apple ID and password to log in. There are several options after logging in.

   Open Find My iPhone. The icon looks like a radar image. Here you need to enter the Apple ID password again. This will open a map interface. Once the device is located, the page will start loading a map showing where the iPhone is located.

   • Or you can go directly to the Find My iPhone website to visit icloud.com/find. You still need to sign in with your Apple ID and password here.

   Pull out the list of iDevices. Click on the "Devices" button in the upper left corner to open the list of devices, all of which have the "Find My iPhone" feature turned on. Select the device you want to find to open the option.

   • a green dot next to a device indicates that the device is online. gray dots indicate offline.
   • "Find My iPhone" will display the last location of the device for 24 hours.

   play a sound on the missing device. if the map shows that the device is nearby, you can click the play sound button in the device options window to make the device make a loud sound.

   turn on lost mode. if the device is really lost, you can start lost mode by pressing the button in the device's options window.

   • if your device doesn't have a lock screen passcode set, you'll be asked to create one. if you have a passcode, lost mode will activate it even if the device has not yet entered lock screen mode. that is to say, if you set the screen to lock after 1 hour of idleness, and turn on the lost mode within 1 hour, the phone will still be locked automatically.
   • you can add a contact phone number. this should be a dialable number that will be displayed on the screen of your lost phone. there is a button on the screen that will automatically dial the number by holding it.
   • you can also add a personalized message that appears along with the phone number.

   Turn off Lost Mode. Once you have retrieved your phone, you can enter the passcode on your phone or click "Stop Lost Mode" on the Find My iPhone website.

   Erase iPhone memory. If you are sure that your phone has been stolen or lost, you can remotely delete all the data on your iPhone by tapping the "Erase iPhone Contents" button in the device's "Options" menu.

   • data deletion is permanent, so this option can only be used as a last resort.
   • USING THIS OPTION WILL DISABLE GPS TRACKING OF YOUR PHONE.

   Use another iOS device. You can use the Find My iPhone app on another iOS device, such as an iPad or another iPhone, to perform the same steps as above. You also need to enter your Apple ID and password.

   • The app functions exactly like the Find My iPhone website.
